Smooth [Hollywood Style] Beginners

More Information

Dancer Dean Collins learned the Lindy Hop in Harlem but moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s. He modified the dance to be "smoother" and to fit horizontal film frames. Collins and his primary partner Jewel McGowan showcased this style in numerous Hollywood films of the era, such as Buck Privates (1941).Modern Revival: The style was carefully documented and named "Hollywood Style" during the 1990s swing revival by instructors like Erik Robison, Sylvia Skylar, and Sylvia Sykes. The "Slot": Unlike the bouncy, circular Savoy style, Hollywood Lindy is a linear dance. The follower travels back and forth along a defined straight line, allowing for faster, sharper rotations. Piked Posture: Dancers keep their weight forward and back straight (similar to sitting on a high stool), which aids in stability and quick directional changes. Footwork & Swivels: The footwork is deliberately "cheated" or shortened compared to traditional East Coast variations to maintain a fast, smooth, and performance-driven look. Because of its linear layout and theatricality, it was highly optimized for camera angles and choreographed routines.
