Our 2 week Balboa Basics course

The Balboa dance  originated in Southern California in the 1920’s and 1930’s on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach.

It got its name from the place where it became popular, the Balboa Pavilion which opened in 1905. Balboa compliments Lindy Hop, Swing and Jitterbug, which are similar dance styles.  It surfaced along with other dance genres including Charleston, Collegiate shag  all associated with start of the jazz age.

Balboa dancing uses an upright body posture. Therefore, a close hold is used in order to maintain a connection. It's shuffling footwork incorporates intricate variations.  Balboa was designed for small spaces or crowded dance floors. Hence, in pure Balboa, the couple remains in a close hold. This great style is easily incorporated into your swing jive or lindy-hop.

In this mini introductory course we'll teach easy transitions from and to swing jive, and teach the two basic step styles.
